Description

Bryant Alsop was engaged to undertake a thorough re-working of this late 19thC attached Victorian house. The house faces south onto a laneway, and was extremely dark and inward looking. One of our main focuses was to bring light and connection throughout the house We have successfully achieved this even in the internal spaces such as the Laundry, Walk in robe and Ensuite with skylights and use of selected materials and finishes. Our other clear direction was to create a feeling of space that belies the 360sq.m site. The completed house now boasts 4 bedrooms (2 with WIRs), 2 bathrooms, separate Powder Room laundry, Study/ Sitting Room , Kitchen with large walk in Pantry, Living, Dining, off street parking, shed, covered deck area and garden space for family. A lot for an inner city house under 500sq.m. The finishes selected have a sophisticated, contemporary feel, that were chosen to reflect the owners ex-pat lifestyle. Blues and greens were used subtly to introduce some warmth to the otherwise monochromatic palette.

The challenge presented by this house – a 2-storey, semi-attached, south facing Victorian terrace – was immediately apparent on first inspection. Introverted and disjointed, the brief was to create a contemporary solution that maximised accommodation on the 360sq.m site, as well as creating a strong connection between rooms, and also to the outdoor areas. The outcome is a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with separate powder room, study/sitting room, large walk-in pantry and off-street parking.

The palette reflects the nature of the original house – soft, warm colours and textures, offset by contemporary elements – steel doors, oak floors, burl timber veneer. Accents in blues and greens provide a sophisticated and at times playful thread; picked up in the tessellated tiles on the front verandah.
