Description

A renovation of a single storey cottage in Tighes Hill Newcastle for my brother and sister in law.

The original cottage at the front of the property, was meticulously restored to retain its nostalgic allure and a two-storey extension was designed at the rear as a contemporary counterpart, breathing new life into the residence. Facing west, the rear of the property embraces stunning views of the community dog park, a focal point that demanded thoughtful integration into the design.

Privacy, an essential consideration, found expression in the form of a recycled brick garage with a green roof. Strategically positioned at the rear, the garage not only shields the property but also opens up to the park, offering the potential for a "hole in the wall" cafe in the future. This multifunctional space is a testament to sustainability and adaptability, embodying the evolving nature of modern living.

Sustainability takes center stage in this renovation, as every effort was made to repurpose materials. Demolished elements from the rear, including internal fixtures like old joinery and original terrazzo benchtops, were salvaged and given new life. Hardwood joists and beams, once part of the demolition debris, were transformed into handrails and screens, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics.
The commitment to sustainability extends further with the incorporation of recycled steel from the rear carport, skillfully welded into vanity bases. The roof, designed as a simple gable, not only preserves the cottage's silhouette but also maximizes the north-facing exposure for solar panels, underscoring a dedication to energy efficiency.
Ingenious design features elevate the living experience within the renovated space. A central void, adorned with carefully positioned openings at the top, facilitates natural ventilation on scorching summer days. Large timber sliding doors, sliding on the exterior of the rear wall, provide an uninterrupted panoramic view of the park blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, inviting nature into the living and sleeping spaces.

In conclusion, the renovation of this single-storey cottage in Tighes Hill is a masterful blend of heritage and innovation, creating a home that not only stands as a testament to the past but also embraces the evolving needs of modern life. The design not only revitalizes the cottage but also harmonizes it with the vibrant community and natural surroundings, setting a benchmark for thoughtful and sustainable design.
