Description

Unley Park is a new, architecturally designed Adelaide home, sensitively reimagined by Georgie Shepherd for its energetic, elderly owners. Downsizing from a traditional abode, the couple was keen to embrace a contemporary style and create a warm, inviting home for family gatherings, while allowing them to age gracefully in place.

Unley Park takes a modern, architecturally designed home with grand proportions, including four-metre-high ceilings at points, and adds softness, tactility and comfort to tell a different story – a space made intimate and inviting, with the versatility to transition effortlessly from large gatherings to quiet, one-on-one moments.

The interiors are a celebration of local South Australian artisans and makers – from the hand-crafted timber joinery, and the hand-trowelled, plaster surfaces to the contemporary artwork that lines the walls.

Exquisite detailing performs the dual function of adding refined luxury to the home, while creating a sense of the familiar to ease the clients’ transition from their previous traditional abode – bevel-edged, Shaker-profile cabinetry with hand-rubbed, aged-brass shadow lines, and a brushed-brass inlay border around the herringbone floor.

A restrained palette meant that no detail was too small to overlook. Rather than book-matching the marble in the kitchen, for example, hours were spent with the stonemason creating a precise, soft-flowing pattern to enhance this all-important heart of the home.

Beautiful craftsmanship, attention to detail and natural materials that will age gracefully combine to create an enduring design that reflects the owners’ personalities, as well as an appealing backdrop for future generations to tell their story.

Questions and Answers

What was the brief?

A multi-faceted brief and two clients with disparate styles required a sensitive response from designer Georgie Shepherd. Creating a warm, inviting and contemporary home with flexible spaces were central to the brief, as was a desire to age comfortably in place.

Individually, the clients had very different styles; he, a lover of high-end, contemporary design; and she, a fashion lover with traditional, artisanal leanings. The generous volume of the internal spaces presented the additional challenge of creating intimacy and cosiness when it’s just the two of them.

A gentle, neutral colour palette, softly veined feature marble and intricate detailing, paired with artisanal touches by local makers, has resulted in a serene and luxurious home that balances both clients’ aesthetics.

Given the couple was downsizing from a long-held family home, it was also important to foster familiarity in terms of layout and flow – an element achieved through meticulous space planning.

Provisions have been made to allow the couple to remain here long-term, including self-contained carer’s accommodation discreetly concealed behind a panelled wall, generous door openings, and concealed safety rails in the shower.

The home feels both fresh and familiar, providing a comforting backdrop for the next stage of the owners’ lives.
