This project is a well considered rejuvenation of a John Baird-designed residence—an architect renowned for his prolific contributions from the 1950s through to the 1990s. The design intervention carefully respects the original structure while introducing a refined contemporary expression that breathes new life into the home.
A new façade treatment defines the home’s renewed identity, featuring a delicate white veil screen that gently wraps the exterior. This treatment is complemented by a sleek, integrated pergola and an operable façade, which opens up to reveal the rear sunlit courtyard. This connection fosters a seamless dialogue between the interior and exterior spaces, allowing natural light and fresh air to flow freely throughout, while enhancing the overall spatial experience. The operable façade offers the flexibility to adjust privacy and ventilation, creating a dynamic relationship with the surrounding environment.
Internally, a 4.5-meter-long sculptural black island bench becomes the defining centerpiece of the home, anchoring the heart of the residence. Its bold presence fosters a dynamic focal point where daily rituals unfold. Thoughtfully curated high-end materials and finishes maintain a balance of warmth and modernity throughout, offering a contemporary yet timeless aesthetic. The result is a residence that balances Beaumaris heritage with modernity, elevating its liveability while maintaining the integrity of Baird’s architectural lineage.
