Description

Completed in late 2014, this new home is located within an established residential suburb of Brisbane over looking a beautiful treed golf course. It has been designed for a golf loving, retired couple who like to entertain their large family that visit regularly from Brisbane and abroad.

The design aims to take advantage of the golf course outlook beginning from the first moment you step inside the front door.   Visitors are welcomed with a view from the entry directly down the centre of the exterior swimming pool and the treed outlook beyond.  The entry space divides the home between the private spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms from the public zones of open planned living, dining and kitchen.  The polished timber floor of the entry also delineates the public and private spaces and continues, following the view, externally to the pool decking.  The double volume entry space is flanked by a stone clad blade wall with openings framed in thick reveals of timber veneer.  High level glazing ensures it is a natural light filled space.  The extra large lighting feature bobs within the void and becomes moon-like at night.

The Golf House has been designed with electric buggy access from the rear of the home directly onto the course.  When putting practice is required there is their own personal putting green in the back yard directly outside the outdoor entertaining area.  It also serves to entertain the grandchildren and other guests.

The owners see this home as the one they want to live in for as long as their health allows.  It is for this reason that a single storey design was incorporated which enables ease of travel throughout the home with no internal stairs.  The final result is one of light filled luxury, with a relaxed natural feel of stone, timber and glass that takes advantage of a beautiful treed outlook.  It has been purposed designed to take this retired couple long into their life with plenty of space to entertain along the way while making the most of the golf course lifestyle.

Questions and Answers

What sustainability features does the project have?

_cross ventilation in all rooms

_insulated walls, roof & ceilings

_majority light coloured external walls

_high level openable glazing to allow heat to escape

_solar panels

_rainwater tank

What was the client's brief for the project?

The brief for the home was primarily to be one that could be lived in for as long as possible throughout the owner's older years. Therefore a single storey home that maximised the views and light to the internal spaces was requested. The home required large entertaining zones and space for visitors. Luxury fixtures and finishes with a natural feel of stone, timber, off whites, beige and tan tones were requested for the interior design.

What were the challenging aspects of this project?

One of the biggest challenges to overcome was the view orientated to the south which is not ideal solar orientation. This was overcome by designing the open planned living, kitchen, dining and lounge room as a whole space from north through to south. This ensured that views were maximised and also light filled the space. Other initiatives to maximise light included high level glazing, external operable louvred roof and skylights.

What was the building / land like before the project started?

The site originally housed a very tired old 1970's brick and tile two storey home that didn't maximise the outlook to the golf course. It was decided to demolish the old home to make way for a custom design.

What makes this project different?

One point of difference is that there is a putting green in the rear of the site. One of the owners is a keen golfer. This allows for putting practice and is also a quirky way to entertain guests after a BBQ.

One of the big factors for the client purchasing the site was that it is located right on the golf course. There is even a buggy path at the rear which will enable a golf buggy to be driven from the house straight on to the course.

The Golf House takes full advantage of the beautiful treed golf course aspect.
