Nestled in the serene coastal enclave of Sans Souci NSW Australia, this home encapsulates the effortless allure of seaside living. Tasked with harmonising mid-century charm with contemporary functionality, The Stylesmiths’ interior designer Rose Sorkeh has transformed this home's kitchen/living zones into a tranquil retreat that responds to a bustling family with a love for entertaining.
The Stylesmiths focused on reimagining the home’s layout, seamlessly merging the living and kitchen areas to create a fluid connection between spaces. Drawing inspiration from the property’s original mid-century features, Rose incorporated timber veneers and stone elements to honour its heritage while weaving in modern updates. With a design that combines modern multi-functionality with mid-century aesthetics, offering a fresh take on contemporary interior design.
Balancing the client’s priorities of relaxation and entertaining, the living spaces combine practicality with understated sophistication. A hidden appliance cupboard and generous island foster a sense of simplicity, while the intentional entryway establishes an inviting tone.
Adjustable glass panels in the hallway offer a clever solution to privacy, filtering light into the living spaces while preserving separation. As you enter through the hallway, an artful combination of textures and materials greets you and introduces a sense of calm, setting the tone for the open-plan living and kitchen area beyond. Warm timber floors ground the space, adding an inviting warmth that contrasts beautifully with the sleek, contemporary finishes.
The hallway entry point is created by the adjustable glass panel feature, framed in rich timber, which subtly partitions the space while filtering soft, natural light. The reed-glass inserts balance privacy with openness, creating an ethereal glow that shifts with the time of day. This panel is both a functional and artistic element, bringing a sense of fluidity that guides the eye towards the open living area.
The built-in shelving niche showcases decor and objects against a backdrop of lightly veined marble, introducing earthy sophistication. The interplay of materials—wood, glass, and marble—harmonises to create a serene ambiance, making this hallway an effortless transition to the home’s central living space.
In the open-plan kitchen, every detail has been thoughtfully curated to blend functionality with a touch of sculptural beauty. At its heart, a striking kitchen island—clad in richly veined marble—serves as both a social hub and a visual anchor, drawing the eye towards the lush outdoor views framed by expansive windows. The island is designed for gatherings, with ample space for food preparation and casual dining, making it an inviting centrepiece that encourages connection.
Above the island, sculptural pendant lights hang like art installations, their intricate forms casting soft, ambient light that enhances the space’s serene atmosphere. These pendants add an artful dimension, marrying form and function to create a sophisticated focal point.
Seamless integrated cabinetry lines the walls, embodying a minimalist ethos that keeps the space uncluttered. Hidden storage solutions maintain a sleek aesthetic, ensuring practicality without compromising on luxury. This kitchen is robust in materials making it ideal for entertaining whilst balancing warmth and functionality.
