Our recently completed Prahran project creates an inner city sanctuary for the owner, who wanted to be able to enjoy the lifestyle of city living, but be able to escape once the front door was closed. The floor plan consisted of four levels, including a three storey courtyard which featured a two storey tall green wall to provide a view to vegetation across multiple levels and rooms. The materials were chosen to accentuate the existing industrial/warehouse structure and feel of the dwelling, which had once been part of a large inner city textiles factory. The existing dwelling went through an extensive remediation process in which multiple sub-consultants were involved in rectifying the dwelling. The end result was a modern, tech-filled home for a young entrepreneur, who could return from work and relax within their own inner city oasis.
What was the brief?
To provide solutions to remediate the existing dwelling to make it liveable, This involved multiple subconsultants and trades to work through a range of issues. The client also wished to design an additional bathroom, bedroom, laundry and powder room into the existing floor plan, which required a complete redesign of the ground, second and third floors.
What were the key challenges?
The existing dwelling had been vacant for a period of time, and required structural and waterproofing attention. Working with multiple consultants and trades we were able to ascertain what was salvageable and what would need to be replaced. This process had to factored into the build time of the project, which meant careful planning throughout the design and construction of the dwelling. Bringing natural light into the narrow four storey dwelling also required careful placement of skylights to allow light into bathrooms and to filter down the central stair case.
How is the project unique?
The existing shell of the dwelling was set, being one of four townhouses subdivided from an existing inner city factory. Much of the existing structure was retained from the existing factory, and had to be incorporated into new structure to bring the dwelling in line with new building codes. The courtyard features an existing three storey brick wall which had a two storey irrigated green wall attached to it, to provide a sense of nature and vegetation within the inner city space.
