Description
New Administration, Junior School and Art Room – Stage 02 Glengala Sunshine West Primary School - Synopsis
In 2018, following the successful delivery of Stage 01 Permanent Modular School Building at Glengala Sunshine West Primary School, Stage 02 has been designed to create an innovative C21st educational facility encompassing interconnected learning environments through the use of advanced building technology.
The purposefully designed adaptable learning areas, prompts an interconnectedness between the new learning environments and the community. All classrooms are connected both to the existing landscape, creating outdoor learning areas and several other classrooms via sliding and rotating doors. These learning environments can easily be adapted to either general or specialist use through the inclusion of undercover entries/exits. Learning environments flow into each other eliminating general trafficable areas. The porous nature of these classroom environments allows the school community to visually connect across the school grounds into the natural landscape, promoting physiological well-being, maximising north natural light and cross ventilation where possible.
The design recognises the varied approach to educational delivery and the need for flexible space including larger and smaller spaces within defined learning areas. Further to these varied spaces, the classrooms are facilitated with smaller withdrawal rooms connecting adjoining classrooms and the administrative area. To enhance the adaptability of the learning environment, the circulation between these areas are varied, ensuring whilst occupied, minimised disruption to learning delivery.
A central public spine visually separates the junior school from the administrative area whilst visually connecting two main entrances into the school grounds. Within Stage 02, the art room is located in the centre of the school grounds creating a nexus between the three school buildings.
Materials are low maintenance and colours are inspired by the existing school buildings and landscape.
In the administrative area, internal materials and colours are muted creating a sophisticated calmness, whilst the junior school has bolder colour scheme to promote wayfinding particularly for the junior students. A pop of purple colour in the centre of the learning environment allows a visual connection to the breakout space and connected learning environments.
