Description

This project is for a private home in the inner-city suburb of Glen Iris, Melbourne. The owners wanted to maximise the internal floor area to create 4 bedrooms and 3 living areas, but not at the cost of light, connection to outdoor spaces, and a free-flowing functional plan.

Our design presents a strong architectural language at the home’s entrance. Deep window reveals and a rendered banding help to define and unite the varying materials and functions. The materials are robust and low-maintenance but work beautifully together to make a bold statement.

The building welcomes you through a portico towards a huge timber pivot door that opens to reveal a tree-lined courtyard beyond. The courtyard is surrounded by double-height glazing which soaks the heart of the home in natural light and creates a connection to nature.

The light and minimal stairway complements the adjacent courtyard glazing, providing a changing view of the trees as you rise to the first floor.

Beyond the stair, you enter a contemporary open-plan kitchen and living-dining space which is designed to extend to a covered alfresco and garden beyond. The kitchen features a huge fully glazed splashback, framing the landscape and bringing light and character to the dark cabinetry. Marble benchtops are replicated throughout the space, providing luxurious high-quality materials and tying the concept together.

Upstairs, full-height glazing provides ample views of the street, but sheer blinds and curtains ensure there is complete control of light and access. Curtain tracks are cleverly concealed to enhance the contemporary look. The bedroom is paired with a huge walk-in robe with light concentrated through a carefully placed skylight. The ensuite is the epitome of luxury. From the heated floor and free-standing bath to the expansive light-filled shower and frameless glazed skylight, each part works together to create a beautiful calming space.
