This early ‘00s detached house was transformed from the standard suburban developer’s spec to an updated home, carefully fitted around three generations of the new owner’s family.
After removing the tired UPVC conservatory, and opening up the full width of the back of the house, the ground floor was re-planned to make the kitchen the hub of an open plan living and dining space. The kitchen island provides views in three directions: out through the dining area to the south-facing garden, across to the living area with its indoor swing, and forward, to a separate play room at the front of the house. The former garage has been converted to a self-contained suite for visiting parents.
The new dining and living area extends out into the garden as a larger brick volume and a smaller sibling in glass above a brick plinth. The brickwork frames the glazing of the dining area, bridging across to form a bench for the patio.
Upstairs, the first floor was refurbished with two new bathrooms, while the two awkward attic rooms have been united into a new master suite, with a new dormer bringing in more daylight and providing views over the rooftops. The same herringbone oak flooring runs throughout the house, linking the various spaces together.
