Description

Surgo House on Sydney's lower north shore navigates some tricky topography and brings a respectful, contextual response through form and fenestration. Our roof design rises and stands proud, capturing greenery sky while expertly managing views to and from the seven adjacent neighbours. Calmness and serenity sits amongst the time detailed interior and exterior details as they unfurl via the rafters, screens, cladding, joinery, flooring, decking and more.

Questions and Answers

What was the brief?

To create a relaxing open plan family living space that afforded a compelling and convenient connection to the outdoor entertaining spaces and garden. To bring in more light and ventilation to improve spatial quality. To create a contemporary and robust dwelling for a young family.

What were the key challenges?

Key challenges included working with an old original building that had already seen a number of alterations and additions. A significant number of neighbours who were close by, creating a number of privacy and overlooking challenges. Bringing in more light and ventilation and improving connection to the garden space with limited area to work in.

What were the solutions?

We retained the side walls of existing rear addition dating from the 70's but creating a new rising roof form and a new stair connection to the first floor which we reconfigured. The first floor contains the children's bedrooms and a rumpus area. We rebuilt the outdoor area and inserted a new pool and landscaping solution. The living spaces flow easily from inside to outside.
