The Malvern House is a contemporary take on the modern family home, and an intuitive response to the needs of a growing household. It was necessary for the home to be built with strength and durability whilst also catering for entertainment, gatherings and family interaction.
Choreographed lines of sight and symmetry are achieved throughout the home. Materiality and texture is celebrated through the use of natural products; concrete, stone and timber, which is softened by leather and portals of natural light via feature skylights.
Offering a distinct visual identity with a balance of materials, the Malvern House is cohesive and synonymous with McKimm homes; demanding precision and attention to detail.
Frameless windows and glazing in place of traditional thresholds emphasise openness rather than separation, and polished concrete floors throughout encourage movement and engagement between the spaces, overall creating a seamless flow for family interaction.
The focal point of the home is the concrete round window situated at the end of the breezeway, it is an unexpected focal point that captures your eye as soon as you enter the home and allows one to see straight through to the outside, spanning the length of the property. Further establishing an indoor - outdoor connection and sense of openness.
For the interior, a darker palette of natural finishes provide a robust backdrop to family life. For the parents, the master suite has views across the sunken courtyard and the circular aperture is deliberately positioned to articulate angles of natural light throughout the day and into the night, further optimising connection and creating a calming and special zone.
