Description

In response to an increasing need for flexible and adaptable office space, Dubbeldam Architecture + Design has developed a concept rooted in bespoke versatility that challenges traditional office design. With a profound shift in the way we work, all we need is a surface to work on and a place to plug in; the working environment is no longer static. Mobility, adaptability and flexibility are the new key elements of the contemporary office.

Dubbeldam's Pop-up Office is a modular office concept that addresses the evolving way in which we work. Built out of reclaimed wood palette boards and their frames, materials destined for the landfill are diverted to an innovative design solution. An assembly of modules, together they form the modern workplace by facilitating both individual work and collaboration – a workspace, collaborative space, lounge area, and refuelling station. Each module is comprised of separate planes (floor, wall, ceiling) and furniture elements that can be assembled in different configurations. These elements easily connect and rely on each other for support through joinery, force, and clips.

Despite the ease of assembly and use of reclaimed material, attention to detail is not overlooked. In sinuous forms, the reclaimed wood boards morph from the wall and floor into furniture elements, sanded smooth where the human body comes in contact with the wood and left rough where it does not. Modular shelves can be inserted into slots between wallboards, creating adjustable display and storage areas. Smaller ledges slide into gaps between the wood slats. Greenery fills the shelves on the back wall in the lounge module to provide a fresh and calming atmosphere. Ceiling boards pivot open creating an adjustable light fixture that defines the collaborative space. Once the modules are assembled, the power points are connected (outlets and light fixtures) and when are plugged into a generator, the Pop-up Office is immediately operational.

Easily transported, reconfigurable and rapidly deployed, 'pop-up offices' are designed for short-term or longer-term use, atypical applications such as outdoor festivals or disaster relief situations, or start-ups looking for modest but functional office space. Stripping away the superfluous, the Pop-Up Office embodies adaptability. With the playful use of materials, lighting and furniture components, the space itself morphs in conjunction with workplace needs.
