Description

Creating an independent school that celebrates connection to place, people and purpose.

The Hester Hornbrook Academy recognises that traditional school isn’t for everyone. They value
most a sense of community and belonging, because it empowers people through connectedness and participation.

Gray Puksand created a contemporary learning environment for the Academy that gave their students the opportunity to connect with other students, support staff, and the wider community in an abundance of adjoining communal study spaces that facilitate meeting and sharing stories, creativity and learning, eating and dining, and natural collaboration and support.

A delightful and accessible environment which feels informal yet supportive to learn in, relax, and interact with other students and staff. Through the use of natural materials, soft colours, and biophilic design, juxtaposed against the raw industrial building form, a welcoming, warm environment has been achieved.

Physical activity from both a recreation and educational perspective was an important wellbeing objective for the project.

The resulting basketball court and fitness room provide a focus for mental as well as physical health for the students. The indoor-outdoor transition area provides a strong connection to nature and the outdoors, whilst maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for everyone to enjoy.

Embracing and celebrating differences, this design supports the Academy’s passionate educators create new and innovative pathways that provide choice and opportunity. As one of Melbourne’s most culturally diverse suburbs, respect and attention to celebrate the diversity of place and community influenced the design outcomes for this project.

The installation of a series of pavilions placed within the greater space, creates a landscape that houses the variety of activity offered by the Academy. The pathways between the pavilions are activated through breakout settings, study nooks, gathering spaces and recreation activity offering true opportunity for authentic experiences.

This is a place for everybody to feel supported, safe and inspired.
