Description

This iconic Austin residence was first built in 1938 as a modern, art deco home that emulated a 1930s ocean-liner, with aluminum railings, porthole windows, a solarium with a curved glass wall, and a circular mahogany door that could be raised and lowered at the touch of a button.

After purchasing the home in 2013, the new owners selected DC+A to make major updates to the home.
The architects added a new two-story addition to the house, nearly doubling the square footage. What is most impressive about this renovation is the mastery of the architecture team in preserving the character of the home throughout these changes.

The seamlessness is truly exceptional, and this is evident in that it is incredibly difficult to differentiate the old from the new in the finished project.

Questions and Answers

What was the brief?

Renovation and addition of classic 30’s mid-century modern residence.

Who are the clients and what's interesting about them?

Married couple with three children who purchased the home due to the classic design. The clients were interesting because they loved the house and wanted to retain its existing ambience. They carried the project through and purchased the right furniture and artwork consistent with the architectural design.

What were the key challenges?

To increase the size and aesthetic of an existing 30’s residence, updating it to a 21st-century program.

What were the solutions?

Enlarging the kitchen footprint to allow for an island, adding a new Garage/Kids’ Bedrooms wing to the house, while retaining and updating interesting elements of the original residence.

Key products used:

The contractor was able to purchase windows from a demolished residence that were from the same manufacturer as the windows on the original residence. These windows were used throughout the new addition to lend a seamless look to the exterior of the project. It was impossible to distinguish between what was new and what was original.
