Description

The Yards is a 232 unit multi-family apartment building in the Stockyards District of Kansas City. Authenticity to the Stockyards past and creative present was the driving force behind the design.

Questions and Answers

What is The Yards' contextual relationship to the area?

The project’s 2-part massing speaks to the contrast of the traditional masonry construction of the adjacent Livestock Exchange Building while simultaneously addressing the more contemporary white metal façade of Helmut Jahns Kemper Arena.

What are some of the design details of the amenities at The Yards?

The warmth of wood guides you through the amenity space from the Concierge area as you enter the building and custom tables in the communal area to the branded Reserve Kitchen wall and built-in shelving of the Reserve Study. In the Communal area, a 16' x 22' Steel Wall becomes a built-in work of art, telling its own story through the waves and variation in the steel that came out through the process of being placed on-site during the entirety of the construction of the building. The last detail that speaks to the neighborhood is the Stockyards bricks that connect the inside communal space to the outside courtyard space, reusing the bricks that were dug up during the initial construction of the building.

How did The Yards project support local artists?

The Yards supports this district’s artists through the integration of art and architecture with a 60’ tall custom exterior installation by Kevin Townsend, evoking the flow of pasture prairie grasses. In addition to that installation the amenity space also features a curated collection of art by Haw Contemporary with work from artists Eric Sall, Yoonmi Nam, Julie Blackmon, Ken Wood, and Matthew Kluber.
