1. View / Living Area

Entering from the small foyer, a breathtaking view of Sydney Harbour unfolds before you. The living room seamlessly transitions into the dining and kitchen areas as the view continues along the whole side of the apartment. Reflecting our client's vibrant personality through colorful furnishings and eclectic artwork, including an installation from William Smart's Chairity project that hangs in the left corner of the living room and complements the city skyline it sits alongside. We designed the windows and door as a frame to the ever-changing Sydney Harbour view, treating it as another dynamic artwork, which is complemented by a dazzling display of lights at night.

3. Family Portrait / Living /Family History

The family portrait titled "On the Move: The Dion Family" has dictated the design of the living space, integrating the living room into a dialogue with its narrative. The artwork was created for a collaboration between the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (Where our client sits on the board) and the Wollongong Art Gallery named "On the Move”. It recounts the journey of the Dion family, chronicling themes of migration, survival, acceptance, and community spirit through archival materials. The Dion family's arrival in Australia in the late 1800s was part of a broader migration spurred by the allure of alluvial gold mining. Settling in the Illawarra in 1907, they swiftly became influential members of the local community.

11. Outdoor Balcony

This original 1970's apartment, once enclosed and dim to ensure privacy for its original owners, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Combining two into one, now stands as a testament to openness and light. One of the highlights of this redesign is the spacious balcony, boasting million-dollar views that seamlessly extend from the main living and dining areas along to the master bedroom. Luxurious wooden decking creates a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living, while a subtle balustrade ensures uninterrupted views. This revamped balcony and outdoor space perfectly encapsulate modern living, where privacy and openness coexist, and although it is not the Eiffel Tower sitting right outside these windows - the Sydney Opera House certainly does not disappoint! B&B Italia 'Borea' armchairs and 'Fat-Fat' side tables from Space Furniture.

Description

This project is a major renovation of an older apartment with incredible views of iconic Sydney Harbour, particularly The Sydney Opera House and The Sydney Harbour Bridge. The design work was significant. Walls were knocked out to combine the kitchen with the dining and living rooms. Doors and windows were modified to maximise views from every angle, opening the most lived-in spaces up to the beautiful and ever-changing view. The interiors of this exquisitely re-imagined residence are a juxtaposition of the sincere and the playful. They do not rely on the iconic views for their impact, rather, they use them as one wall of artwork that has a conversation with those on other walls.
The design is a personal journey for the client, one that reaches across to France to reference her love of Paris and Hotel Costes. It is a home that speaks of the client’s playful fashion sense, and her delight in entertaining. The kitchen needed to complement our client’s extensive art collection. Think Calcutta Vagli marble and chevron-style parquetry. Ben Quilty’s “The Pink Skull” takes pride of place on the dining room wall and Lindy Lee’s “Listening to the Moon” sculpture is mesmerising. This piece, hung over the newly formed stairwell, is set so that it creates ripples in the ceiling it descends from and across the backdrop wall, referencing the curved planes of the interior of the Opera House it faces.
