Description

A YOUNG FAMILY OF SIX WAS IN DESPERATE NEED OF ADDITIONAL SPACE AND AMENITY, AND WANTED TO STAY IN THEIR CURRENT HOUSE, WHEN THEY APPROACHED BLOCK ARCHITECTURE STUDIO FOR DESIGN IDEAS. WITH BUDGET IN MIND, THE PLAN WAS RECONFIGURED TO BECOME MORE EFFICIENT, WITH A MODEST EXTENSION ADDED TO THE REAR OF THE PROPERTY, ALLOWING FOR ADDITIONAL BEDROOMS FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY AND BETTER FUNCTIONING COMMUNAL SPACES BOTH INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY. THE ORIGINAL HARDWOOD FLOORS WERE RETAINED AND BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE, WHICH TIED INTO THE MUTED, CALMING PALETTE OF WHITES, GREYS AND TIMBER.

Questions and Answers

What was the brief?

To provide additional bedrooms and living areas for four growing children, without extending too far outside of the existing footprint of the building. Having a pool/backyard was critical for the children.

What were the key challenges?

The biggest challenge was to reconfigure the floor plan to allow for additional bedrooms and living spaces without encroaching on the backyard. This was done by utilising two hallways to divide private and public spaces, and introducing strategically placed skylights to bring light into the centre of the plan.
