Little Gold Living is the transformation of a small inner-city home with poor circulation and disconnected communal spaces into a warm, highly functional retreat. The original layout featured a cramped, isolated kitchen and an oversized, underutilised living area. The new design integrates the kitchen with the dining space, optimising flow and maximising storage while fostering a more cohesive living environment.
A key intervention was replacing a small window with large bi-fold doors, opening the rear of the house to the well-lit backyard and enhancing indoor-outdoor connectivity. The family of three desired booth seating with integrated storage, an island bench, and as much concealed storage as possible within the compact space. Custom joinery was introduced throughout to reduce the need for freestanding furniture, allowing for a more streamlined and spacious feel.
Music was central to the family’s lifestyle, inspiring the replacement of a side access door with a bespoke LED-lit record display, creating a striking focal point. A freestanding cast iron fireplace was added to bring warmth and intimacy to the living area, which also features hidden storage solutions for gaming consoles.
Materiality was carefully considered to enhance the home’s inviting atmosphere. Brass accents and warm timber veneer contribute to a rich, cosy aesthetic, while solid timber fluting and bullnose terrazzo stone with soft pink aggregate introduce refined, textural detail. These elements create a sense of understated luxury while maintaining a highly practical and liveable space.
Little Gold Living exemplifies how thoughtful design can reshape a challenging layout into a functional, character-filled home. By prioritising connection, storage, and material warmth, the project transforms a once-disjointed house into a cohesive and inviting sanctuary.
