Description

A stunning transformation of a 1930s P&O-style home on Sydney’s lower north shore, originally purchased as a deceased estate by Katie and James McElvogue. With its sleek lines and Art Deco charm, the home boasted original features like steel-framed windows, geometric wallpaper, and a lion's head bath spout, but it was far from practical for a growing family. Architect and interior designer Brooke Aitken led the complete overhaul, preserving the home’s period charm while creating a spacious, functional layout for modern living.
The project began by restoring the facade and front rooms, including a curved living room and Art Deco fireplace. A new rear extension, featuring an openplan kitchen, dining, and family area, was added to maximise natural light and create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow to the poolside entertaining space. A first-floor extension followed, introducing four bedrooms and two extra bathrooms, while a flat roof true to the P&O style was reinstated.
Careful attention to detail throughout the home, like vintage lighting and Catherine Martin wallpaper in the living room, ensured the design remained faithful to its Art Deco roots while accommodating the needs of a contemporary Australian family. Now a glamorous, light-filled home that blends old-world elegance with modern comfort!
