Description

Hugg is a 100m2 shop that sells Health and Sheepskin Products located on Lonsdale St in Melbourne’s CBD.

Assembled from readily available building materials the fit-out explores the interplay of two geometries; one regular and modular the other a series of irregular surfaces.

Questions and Answers

What makes this project different?

This projects brings 2 disparate products together; footwear and health and beauty products, in a spatially coherent interior.

What was the building / land like before the project started?

The space was formerly a completely plaster lined space with none of the original base building revealed.

Did the design change much during the design and building process?

The design evolved during the construction project as there were open and frequent conversations between builder and the design team.

As an example the original intention was to put a coloured epoxy over the existing large format floor tiles. The floor had been used for the setout and had builder codes and notes, paint overspray and other markings. The first coat of epoxy was clear - entombing the construction markings, we all agreed to leave the epoxy clear revealing the site markings.

How would you describe the clients?

Very brave. We were lucky that we were recommended by the owner of Yellow Earth, another sheepskin product fitout that we completed at Emporium.

There was however a high level of trust required to let us design a very unconventional shop interior on a tight budget and timeline.

What was the client's brief for the project?

The brief was very open; the space had to accommodate a large amount of stock and perform as 2 shops within the one space.

The budget was set at $100K AUD and completed in 6 weeks from concept design to opening.

What was your solution to the brief and the challenges involved?

A major challenge was to create a shop that reflected the vitality of the brand.

The name Hugg evolved out of conversations with Andrew Ashton of Work Art Life - the idea that 2 seeminglly incompatible elements could be brought together H(health) + UGG (ugg boots) = Hugg

The brief was open in that there was no requirement to depict the stereotypical aspects of sheepskin products - the bush, corrugated iron etc.
