Description

ELOUERA is a spectacular property in Bowral NSW, sitting up high on Oxley's Hill and looking down over the Bowral township. The project was to renovate an existing 1930's bungalow, and add a contemporary addition to rear of the existing house which captured the expansive views and the changing weather rolling in from the south. The project was designed to connect to an existing garden, retain existing trees, repurpose the existing dwelling and make better use of an existing tennis court.

Questions and Answers

What was the brief?

The brief for the project was to creatively modify the existing residence whilst considering a contemporary addition to the property. The design solution centered around repurposing the existing bungalow for the use of private and quiet bedroom spaces, whilst relocating the main living areas of the dwelling into the new addition. This allowed us to retain the existing wall/window relationship of the existing house as it was suited to bedroom spaces, and then explore maximising the glazing to the new parts of the house. Part of the brief included designing an attached self-contained apartment within the building footprint, exploring a new front entry and maximising the sustainability of the property.

What are the sustainability features?

The project has been designed to accommodate over 40kW of solar panels across the new, north facing roof. The project features double glazing/thermally broken frames throughout all the new addition, and has been re-glazed with low-E performance glass for all existing windows. The house is heated using a geothermal system with in-slab hydronics to all new concrete slabs, and radiator panels throughout the existing parts of the house.

How is the project unique?

The project is unique as it included a substantial contemporary addition to the rear of a traditional 1930's bungalow. The solution was interesting as it utilised the existing footprint of the bungalow to accommodate all the bedroom (private) spaces, allowing the family and living areas to spill into the new addition. The substantial use of glass allows views down into the Bowral township.
