Description

SR&O worked with a curated group of manufacturers and suppliers on the re fit and furnishings of this existing townhouse in Prahran. Nestled into a discrete pocket off the main shopping strip, celebrating the sense of a calm urban oasis was one of the key drivers of the design.

The orientation of the main areas followed the existing footprint, but we further opened these up to maximise the cross flow of natural light and visual opportunities into the landscaped courtyards.

The main palette is subtle and textured, with colour ‘pops’ in key sightlines to provide interest and depth throughout the spaces.

The layering of furniture and objects was important to further anchor the spaces. The areas are a mix of custom and proprietary pieces, largely from local manufacturers.

Questions and Answers

What was the brief?

The brief was to create a more contemporary and light-filled set of spaces, within the existing floor plan and current wall layout. The client wanted to introduce some considered areas of colour, to create more points of vibrancy throughout the townhouse.

What were the key challenges?

The design process was fairly straightforward, as it was well briefed by the client which led to a very well received Concept process. As with most projects though, there were some small challenges; this included electrical challenges (modernising the fitout within dated circuits), budget management (we worked closely with the builder to overcome unforeseen expenses) and lead times on some items.

What were the solutions?

Communication with the client was key in resolving any unforeseen costs and leadtime issues. Also, working closely with a known and trusted builder assisted us in monitoring the process. The result was a well resolved project that the client was really thrilled with.
