Description
The renovation of an existing apartment located within 1940s International Style building with Art Deco interiors for the disciplinary designer Danielah Martinez, her husband Mario Gamboa , and the couple's young daughter. The apartment had beautiful solid timber double herringbone floorboards and steel windows, but otherwise the interior was plain and uninspiring.
The client brief was to make the home feel like a Parisian apartment: traditional interior detailing, with a mixture of modern and vintage furniture, and walls filled with art.
They already had a wonderful art and furniture collection, so the approach was to transform the foundations of the apartment to complement these pieces. Drawing inspiration from the building and apartment’s history we looked to employ art deco materiality, modernist clean design principles through joinery, and pattern and form motifs from 1920s and 1930s art movements.
The apartment has a lovely leafy outlook, especially through the nursery, and we wanted this to be encountered throughout the home. To address this we added in a new large archway door between the dining room and nursery, which has allowed the external views to be appreciated as soon as you walk into the home.
The apartment also had wonderful original solid herringbone flooring, however this had a dark and glossy stained finish on it which made the apartment feel quite small. We sanded and restained these to a beautiful honey tone, which has given the illusion of more space and has created a lovely base for the rugs and furniture pieces that zone the apartment.
Reviewing the base build elements and inserting detailing was key to the design approach. We looked to add new skirting, wainscoting, cornices, coffers and fluted glass French doors throughout the apartment to provide a detailed base for the joinery and furniture design to sit against.
With the client's extensive art collection the consideration of the wainscotting and lighting placement was crucial. There was a lot of playing with the wainscotting and coffer sizes, patterns, and locations to achieve an accommodating base, while also allowing for future adaption as new pieces enter the home, or existing pieces move around.
The existing apartment has a concrete slab ceiling, which could not be touched to move or add new lighting pieces. To overcome this, and to allow for a detailed lighting strategy to showcase the client’s artworks, plaster coffers were added to cleverly conceal cabling while playing into the decorative layering occurring in the design.
And a key aesthetic feature within the home is the fireplace, where a stunning Arabescato Vagli marble was sourced, with the veining connecting back to the feature pendant within the space.
The result is a layered and bespoke apartment for the creative young family to enjoy.
