Description
The Without Studio office resides under the historic beams of an apartment within the Foy & Gibson Precinct in Collingwood - an inner-north suburb of Melbourne, Australia. The space, shared with Fred International, utilises some unexpected pairings of colour, texture and scale to marry the the heritage architecture of the building with the furniture and objects that live within it.
Fred International occupied the space for 6 years prior to our coming together. We approached this project like we would any private residential space, by taking the old and re-conceptualising how we all saw it. Working with a large collection of existing pieces we were able to reimagine their purpose through reupholstery, finish combinations and placement. We paired these with new pieces and integrated the work of Melbourne-based makers and artisans, layering on the backdrop of the refreshed interior architecture.
The launch of the new space coincided with Melbourne Design Week. We were fortunate for the collective that contributed to the event, including Australia’s representatives for Reuber Henning, Halcyon Lake, whose relaunch of the Casablanca Flower Hammock brought another immersive experience to the space.
We titled the project ‘Upturned’ in reference to the lantern ceiling, a feature which gives visitors to the space the impression of walking into the belly of a tall ship that’s been tipped upside down.
Questions and Answers
What inspired the creation of Upturned, and how did the collaboration between Without Studio and Fred International come about?

Can you describe the architectural and design elements that make Upturned unique? What were the key considerations during the design process?
We titled the project ‘Upturned’ in reference to the lantern ceiling, a feature which gives visitors to the space the impression of walking into the belly of a tall ship that’s been tipped upside down.
The tight turnaround and small budget meant distilling our concept to focus in on two key finishes – paint and carpet. Given we could only make superficial changes, we needed them to do a lot of heavy lifting from an impact standpoint and that’s what resulted in the spliced colour placement.
We created the two custom colours as an unexcepted pairing. They balance each other out in their applications, brand representation, volume and depth. The colour placement and gloss levels also negate the varying natural-light sources including East and West facing windows, the top-lit lantern ceiling and entirely windowless spaces.
What were some of the biggest challenges faced during the development of Upturned, and how were they overcome?
It’s rare to see two businesses occupying a residential space, it’s even more rare to see two design-based businesses be equally represented in that space. With the cost of living increasing, we feel that a shared working environment will become more prevalent. In recent years we’ve seen these result in paired-back spaces that are adaptable in a utilitarian sense, but the occupants lack design autonomy. We feel it is a great shame to lose your brand identity in a space that should be a physical manifestation of your business, which is particularly detrimental when working in the design industry.
Conceptualising a result that cohesively elevates the Scandinavian-forward design of Fred International with Without Studio’s more maximalist approach was our greatest achievement at Upturned, and one we hope can be modelled by other female-lead small businesses.
