This project involves two large homes, designed with a focus on espresso tones and warm wood interiors while also creating a connection between the inside and outside. Located on a challenging site in Halifax, bordered by a busy street and a waterfront, the design preserves mature trees by positioning the homes on the northern side of the lot, leaving the landscape intact. Horizontal planes and shiplap-clad upper floors integrate the houses seamlessly with the natural surroundings, while large windows and stone walls ensure privacy and expansive views, bringing the beauty of nature indoors.
Inside, rich wood finishes flow throughout the spaces, with continuous espresso-coloured wood cabinetry and panels that extend from room to room. This wood wall unifies the spaces in House One, transitioning from kitchen cabinetry to a bar, bookcase, and more, creating a layered, natural experience. House Two incorporates stone and wood elements, blurring the line between the interior and exterior and drawing the natural surroundings into the living spaces. The use of espresso tones in the cabinetry and flooring enhances the luxurious atmosphere, while large windows allow natural light to illuminate the rich materials.
Both homes are designed with energy-efficient features and thoughtfully laid-out spaces, including expansive kitchens, mudrooms, and functional service areas. The moody, dark wood is a central design feature in every room, from the kitchen to the living areas, creating a warm, inviting environment that blends modern luxury with nature’s beauty.
