Description

A+H apartment is a design response to a young family seeking a minimalistic transformation of their apartment that celebrated the inherent and lasting beauty of natural materials.

The result needed to create a controlled, arranged and yet elegant interior landscape that could be interpreted into the owners desired lifestyle.

The design maximizes the small space, providing the family with flexibility within rooms to create private space for one person to insulate themselves from activity while maintaining the ability to be suitably transformed for larger social gatherings and entertaining.

Living room joinery opens to reveal “his and hers” small office spaces which can be concealed or left available without affecting the functionality of the remaining area. The kitchen bench conceals an expandable dining room table that provides versatility for casual family meals and entertaining friends.

The materials were chosen for their resilient, robust finish or for their natural patina and tactile nature that will improve over time. Raw brass was used in mesh screens to allow ventilation and matching solid brass integrated into joinery. This is balanced with the rich tones of custom stained American Oak solid timber and veneers. Corian countertops were selected for longevity in the kitchen, pantry and vanity benches.

The material palette was carefully chosen for its enduring characteristics and the lasting and timeless qualities of these materials can be felt within the space.

The clients are a young family who recently welcomed their second child. The design has allowed the family to retain residence within the centre of Rhodes CBD, close to the facilities that they have grown to love and avoiding the need to relocate to the suburbs in order to fit their growing family.

The efficient and minimal detailing of the project has afforded them functionality within the envelope of their apartment, with the comfort and relaxation they desire.
