Description

20+ years ago our clients built their family home and they knew it was time to update. We are delighted that they called us for design expertise.

Aside the dated appearance of the home, key drivers for the renovation were centred around practicalities and how the family had grown. The guest room had become a study/ tuition room and the TV room was now more a gaming room and hang out for the 2 boys.

We started at the front door and meticulously worked our way through the entire property mindful of assessing family heirlooms, sentimental possessions, and practical keepsakes to retain as part of the marvellous makeover.

The pièce de résistance, (as many parents will appreciate) was the opportunity to finally upgrade their own master bedroom, walk in robe and ensuite. “once you step off the hallway…it’s like stepping into a 5 star hotel!” Rich navy blue faux shagreen (shark skin) wallpaper and stunning pendant lights over the bespoke upholstered bedhead create an immediate mood swing from hectic day to relaxing ambience. There wasn’t a huge amount of real estate dedicated to the WIR so with clever spatial planning, we capitalised on every square inch wall to wall and floor to ceiling to provide a practical but very sexy WIR.

What was the brief?

The brief for this powder room was very simple. It had to be both beautiful AND functional. The clients are members of a large extended family that likes to entertain en masse, and it was important to the clients, that their family were able to share a bit of luxury when visting. The powder room also had to work within the stylistic parameters of an existing abode – all while having its‘ own personality.

What were the solutions?

This ensuite of this parents’ retreat is designed to be an oasis of calm during a hectic day. The constant usage of this space required it to be functional, low maintenance, have a sense of privacy without sacrifice of light, all the while being visually calm and aesthetically pleasing. It also needed to aesthetically flow from the other rooms in this parental domain, and to satisfy the ergonomic requirements of the clients, who required low bench heights and easy-to-reach touchpoints.
The design process began with the selection of robust materials that required low maintenance. Large format tiles were selected for the majority of the space, coordinated with very hard natural stone and mould-resistant laminate, thus freeing up more time for this couple to spend with their young children.
As this ensuite has no door, privacy was a major concern, so the decision was made to use reeded glass for the shower screen, as well as a new nib wall adjacent to the toilet, allowing light to filter through, while maintaining modesty.
The vanity joinery was designed specifically for the ergonomics of this family, providing more storage below bench, and the opportunity for the family to fully see their faces in mirrors on the cabinet fronts. The joinery also allowed for the opening of a new adjacent hinged timber shutter on the window.
As this is a very busy family with various schedules, it was decided to double most fittings including tapware, basins and heated towel bars. These were installed in a brushed nickel finish to match the custom, locally-sourced wall lights, that provide an element of softness and glamour against the grid pattern of finger tiles.
