38. Library

Alongside local makers, Christopher Blank, one of the pieces we designed with ‘play’ in mind was the Games Table. Starting with the aesthetic, the base has a stacked geometric form, nodding to the Lego the family build together.   The hinged leaves are easily accessed via a neatly concealed magnetic key which lifts out the centrepiece of the table to reveal finger pulls. This playful element needed to be carefully designed with precision so that when closed, there was no chance of a lost puzzle piece and when open is robust enough for an adult to sit on an extension leaf. Other items: Custom upholstered Niche chair, Novel Chair and Mosaic light via Fred International. Custom made rug, including design by us. Window furnishings.

Description

Our Keys + Projects project is located in the bayside area of Parkdale in Melbourne. We were engaged for the Furniture Procurement + Curation.

The focus on play, puzzles and games was a story that was interwoven throughout the whole project. We titled the project ‘Keys + Pockets’ in reference to the tabs/outies (keys) and blanks/innies (pockets) of a jigsaw puzzle piece.

The couple and their five children made decisions around this house serving as their forever home. With this in mind, they were eager to make it their own in a way that was not driven by a pre-conceived notion of what the interiors should look like, rather how they should feel. They wanted it to be fun, highly tactile and interactive while having different moments that can be experienced either as an individual, couple, family, adult or child.
This resulted in a vast majority of the pieces being custom made and commissioned by local artists and makers. This theme is particularly evident in the interlocking furniture pieces as exemplified in the red games table, which has 4 leaves that fold out to host either a larger group or a giant puzzle to be chipped away at over days.
The outcome is a space that is layered, playful, functional and sometimes even kinetic. We’re thrilled to have been part of such an impactful project that will propel them into a new stage of their lives.

Describe the interior decoration of the project

Without Studio were engaged for furniture procurement + art curation with Kiril Architects completing the Architecture and Interior Design for the project.

Describe how the project is an example of excellent interior decoration(

Although there are some incredible proprietary furniture pieces available, the only way to truly provide clients with the unique experience aligned with a high-end property is to create one-of-a-kind, custom items in collaboration with the end user.

Since the imposition of covid, people’s daily rituals have centred strongly around the home, with families looking to future proof their lifestyles by designing in the elements they missed when they weren’t able to venture out.

With a heavy importance on creating spaces and furniture pieces which champion bond building between family members, custom designs should provide joy, not only in a visual sense, but in an interactive sense.

Working with local makers, we tailored all of the family’s furniture pieces that would be the centrepiece for gathering, for example the games table, dining table and coffee table. Supporting Australian businesses perpetuates the industry with education and profit continuing to advance local design practice.
