Kitsilano Heritage is a captivating renovation project that centers around an original 1910 residence, which had been previously converted into a multiplex. The goal of the renovation was to return the property to its roots as a single-family home while also preserving its historical charm. The project involved transforming three levels of the house, totaling 3,600 sqft, into a modern living space with a thoughtful layout.
Upon completion, the house now boasts a seamless blend of historical elegance and contemporary convenience. The ground floor, designated as the 'public' area, features a modern kitchen, a formal dining room, a powder room, and a welcoming lounge area. This floor serves as the heart of the home, where the family can entertain guests and create lasting memories.
The second floor, the 'private' retreat, was carefully reconfigured to accommodate the family's needs. It comprises a comfortable bedroom with a full bathroom, a home office for productivity, a laundry room for convenience, and a small family room where relaxation takes center stage.
The top floor, reserved exclusively for the primary suite, provides an exquisite sanctuary. This luxurious space includes a bedroom, a spacious walk-in closet, and a stunning bathroom that exudes elegance. To further enhance the experience, three small balconies offer serene spots to enjoy the surrounding views.
The basement suite, retained as a separate dwelling, serves as a versatile space for family members or long-term visitors, adding an element of flexibility to the living arrangements.
Throughout the home, Madeleine Design Group, as part of their full turn-key service, took great care in curating the interior design and furnishings. With the exception of the clients' cherished antique dining set and a couple of accent pieces, all the furniture was thoughtfully provided to complement the historic features while infusing modern comforts and style.
Who are the clients and what's interesting about them?
The clients for this project were Vancouverites returning ‘home’ from living in the UK for a number of years. They purchased a 4-level heritage home in Vancouver’s bustling, in-demand Kitsilano neighbourhood. The home, originally built around 1910, had been converted into multiple separate apartments, but the new clients had multi-conversion on the mind to turn it back into a single-family dwelling, and Madeleine Design Group (MDG) was hired to make it happen.
What were the key challenges and solutions of this project?
The challenges for this project were not so much numerous as they were time consuming. Planning for the project began in January 2019; the clients finally moved in during the Fall of 2022. The pandemic brought about supply chain issues and labor shortages, but a major portion of time was spent just waiting for permit approval.
Permitting for a project of this scale in Vancouver can be a lengthy approval process to begin with; adding the challenges of changing the property from a multi-conversion dwelling back to a single-family residence proved costly in time. In the end, permission was granted, and the structural challenge began: a lot of steel and extra footings in the basement had to be introduced to accommodate the new open floor plan. The basement suite remained its own separate dwelling.
How is the project unique?
The clients' desire to maintain the charm of the house meant that special attention was given to preserve and restore the original characteristic features that came with this heritage home. These features included crown molding, decorative accents, original doors, and windows, and the focal point being the antique hardwood flooring that was carefully restored and thoughtfully incorporated into the new, open floor plan. These features served as captivating focal points in this newly renovated space!
