The project involved a partial renovation to the rear wing of a large beachside home for a growing family on the Central Coast.
The tired kitchen was replaced and expanded to include a butler's pantry and under stair wine cellar with the centrepiece of the room being the enclosed breakfast booth retreat. An unusable courtyard was in-filled to become a light-filled breakout space complete with a hanging fireplace and organic niches that link with the rear wellness centre. Linking the spaces is a new bathroom designed to continue to calming feel and service the core of the house.
1. Brief:
The client's brief was to create a light-filled home that captured everything they loved about living on the Central Coast- a natural, summer holiday feel
2. Challenges:
Finding the right textural materials that would also be durable. The client didn’t want any shiny perfect surfaces; she loved the patina of age worn pieces; however still needed a family-friendly easy to clean space.
3: Solution:
We decided to work with Duncan from Concrete bespoke and he pre cast the concrete island to include ripples and a hand sculpted feel to the island, at the same time as it being a more hardwaring material the rendering it with rockcote or similar.
We also custom-designed the bathroom sink which was cast in concrete as well. It gives the feeling of a worn stone basin whilst being durable.
Bathroom walls were rendered in a micro cement and living area walls were painted in 2 different brush tones from porters paints too give a lime wash effect whilst still having the wipeable capabilities of a traditional paint finish.
The kitchen has pocket doors that tuck in on the back bench to hide mess if required or reveal organic moroccan tiled splashback when the doors are open.
For the wellness space we selected flecks in the rubber softfall matting to look like pebbles on a beach, whilst being practical for a home gym.
