In Tønder, a small historic city in the southwestern outskirts of Denmark, Tønder Handelsgymnasium, the local commercial high school, has been extended with a new, large multipurpose sports hall, including a fitness room and changing facilities.
The existing, adjacent school buildings are one storey buildings, with prominent gable roofs. The school is a part of a larger structure though, with three independent schools, that was extended and established as Campus Tønder in 2015, a project also executed by ZENI arkitekter (https://www.zeni.dk/campus-tnder). The most prominent building extension in 2015, was a two storey, flat roofed school building, with characteristically rounded corners in the aluminum clad façades, and with a scale similar to the new sports hall. The new sports hall has borrowed its topology from the building extension from 2015, and has similarly rounded corners, and a matching height, to secure a consistency in the expression of the new building additions.
The new sports hall is linked to the existing school, by a low, connecting hallway, with all glass facades, giving it a light and transparent expression. The part of the new building, closest to the existing school, consists of a one-storey building, matching the wall height of the existing school. This lower part of the new building contains a fitness room, changing rooms and a large storage room.
Since 2015 there has been a growing focus on the need for more environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions, especially in the building industry, which accounts for approx. 30% of C02 emissions. This is evident in the new sports hall, were alle the main constructions and the exterior, as well as a substantial part of the interior cladding, is made of wood.
Inside the sports hall, the glulam constructions, with columns and beams, are visible, and visually divide the large room into smaller sections. From the floor, and 3 meters up (approx. 9 feet), matching the height of the windows, the walls in the sports hall are clad with plywood. The rest of the walls, in the 8,5 meters high room, as well as the ceiling, are clad with wood concrete, to secure optimal acoustics.
The change in material on the inner walls, is matched on the outer facades, where there is a change in the width of the wood boards used for cladding, with broader boards from 3 meters and up. The boards are all ThermoWood, a special tretment of the wood, where it is slowly heated up to 200 degrees C, making it resistant towards rot and fungal infection, as well as making it very form stable.
