Number_16 is a beautiful family home located in historic Berrima Village in the Southern Highlands, NSW.
The project was to create a contemporary new home for Jess Hunter and her family - Jess is a local interior designer and was keen to explore what a contemporary new home might be within the restrictive heritage controls of the Berrima Town Centre.
The project explored the fusion of old and new, arranging the home as a series of pavilions across the sloping site, with the street facing pavilion expressed as a traditional Georgian-style cottage and locating contemporary pavilions to the rear of the site. The pavilions changed level as the site sloped up toward the north, and each pavilion accommodated a different part of the project brief - the traditional Georgian-style pavilion accommodated the children's bedrooms, the central pavilion was dedicated to the parents area/master bedroom and the rear pavilion accommodated the family living areas. The pavilions were linked together in an elegant way which allowed light to penetrate the entire house. Working with Jess, the interior design reflected the architectural intent of the project.
What was the brief?
To design a beautiful home for Jess Hunter and her young family. The house had to be fresh, light-filled, robust and comfortable for a young family, whilst responding to the heritage controls of Berrima Village and the sloping topography of the site.
What were the key challenges?
The heritage controls of the Berrima Village were prescriptive and are often limiting to creating contemporary, light filled buildings. By separating the project into a series of three pavilions, the front (street facing) pavilion could address the heritage design controls, whilst the rear pavilions could be contemporary, light filled and open.
