This 1880s terrace house located in the heart of Lavender Bay’s conservation area, has been thoughtfully restored to honour its heritage while introducing modern elements that enhance its functionality and aesthetic appeal. Throughout the process, our team ensured the renovation carefully balanced respect for the home’s historical character with the demands of contemporary living, creating a residence both practical and beautiful.
The project began with a clear vision: to preserve and enhance the home’s original features while tailoring the design to suit the client’s lifestyle. Nathalie Scipioni Architects guided the client through every stage of the renovation process, including concept development, approvals, construction administration, heritage considerations and interior design. Key heritage features were reinstated including the restoration of the front façade, which was repainted and restored to its original charm. Inside, the original staircase was retained, while worn carpets were replaced with sophisticated new floorboards adding freshness to the space.
A key challenge of the renovation was addressing the lack of an internal bathroom and laundry on the ground floor, a common issue in homes of this era. The solution was a thoughtfully redesigned layout that seamlessly incorporated a modern laundry and bathroom seamlessly blending functionality with the home’s heritage character. Additionally, the owner envisioned an ensuite for the master bedroom, prompting a carefully considered redesign to seamlessly integrate this feature without compromising the home’s heritage feel. One of the bathrooms features intricate, traditional patterned tiles—a design choice that maintains the home’s history while adding a touch of modern elegance. These tiles serve as both a focal point and a unifying element, tying together the material palette across the property.
Natural light was another focus of the design, with large glass doors opening onto the courtyard on the ground floor and skylights introduced to the top floor. These updates not only brighten the home but also create a welcoming and airy at
mosphere, transforming the interior spaces.
The addition of balconies to the attic was another key addition, designed to complement the home’s heritage character while providing the client with much-needed outdoor space. These balconies not only enhance the property’s functionality but also frame stunning views of the surrounding area, elevating the home’s appeal.
This project demonstrates how heritage homes can be respectfully adapted to suit modern living. By combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design solutions, we at Nathalie Scipioni Architects have created a home that is not only aesthetic but also deeply connected to its past—a perfect harmony of blending heritage with modern sophistication.
