An Entire Home Remodel and Addition in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. The design features a unique, flowing, serpentine expansive kitchen island leading you from the Main Entry towards the open Living Dining Area with expansive views of the San Francisco Skyline.
The main challenges of the project were natural light, working within the constraints of a typical San Francisco long, narrow floor plan and an outdated challenging existing floor plan.
The remodeled home features a light filled, new open main level Kitchen, Dining and living space. As you ascend the newly opened staircase from the Ground level, you're greeted with a dramatic, flowing serpentine Kitchen island. The serpentine island is set at a slight angle, visually drawing you into the home. A large window wall was added to capture views of the San Francisco Skyline, now visible from the open Kitchen, Dining and Living Area.
On the Ground Floor previous unused Garage space and an Addition are combined to create a light filled new Master Bedroom Suite and Bath.
What was the brief?
The existing 2 story, 2,758 sq. ft. San Francisco Potrero Hill Home was completely remodeled. A Ground Floor 250 sq. Ft. addition and 790 sq. ft. of the Ground Level Garage were combined to create a light filled Master Bedroom Suite and Bath. The new Master Bedroom opens onto a newly landscaped rear yard.
The Main 2nd Level was completely remodeled with a new open, light filled Kitchen, Dining and Living Area. The new main space features a unique serpentine Kitchen Island. A new window wall was added featuring expansive views of the San Francisco Skyline.
What were the key challenges?
Working within an existing long, narrow floor plan with limited opportunity for light at the middle of the home.
A poorly placed existing main staircase leading directly to a closed of 2nd level Entry off of an existing Kitchen. One needed to pass through the existing Kitchen to reach the main Living and Dining Area
What were the solutions?
Opening up the existing home, removing existing constraining walls that created dark, unused spaces. This resulted in an open light-filled Main Living Space. The new Serpentine Kitchen island adds visual interest as you enter the Main part of the home. The island defines the kitchen space while visually leading your eye towards the window wall and expansive views of San Francisco.
What are the sustainability features?
FSC certified cabinetry and millwork
Key products used:
Porcelain counter tops and shower enclosure for the Master bath.
A down draft, telescoping hood that allows the range to be placed in the serpentine island.
How is the project unique?
What makes the project unique is the flow and visual interest created by the new serpentine island and the remodeled open Main Kitchen, Dining and Living Area.
