Located in Tateishi, an area still maintaining the atmosphere of the good old days of downtown Tokyo and famous for its budget-friendly drinking and dining scene, Zion is a small chicken cuisine specialty restaurant with only seven counter seats and five table seats.
In early 2019, the owner-chef determined to relocate his business from Yokohama to Tokyo, wishing for an intimate dining space where he and his wife could closely attend to their customers while having relaxing conversations and offering thoughtfully prepared dishes and drinks.
In response to the couple's request, the architect came up with a design reflecting the charming atmosphere of the downtown neighborhood and harmonizing with the clients' personalities. The space exudes a relaxing and unpretentious ambiance, encouraging customers to enjoy their meals and drinks accompanied by friendly conversations with the couple. The intentional use of unfinished materials, such as rough cement panels and raw steel, added a human touch to the interior while creating a cohesive atmosphere. The central suspended shelf that makes a focal point of the space was designed explicitly for Zion, crafted with 19mm square steel bars arranged in a grid pattern.
Zion provides a unique and inviting dining experience, allowing customers to savor delicious cuisine while relishing the warm and welcoming atmosphere crafted by the owners' personal touch. Despite being located in a highly competitive area, it has become one of the popular choices in the neighborhood since its opening.
What was the brief?
A project for a small restaurant in Tokyo's downtown area where the owner couple offers refined chicken cuisine. The architect successfully created an intimate space that harmonizes with the couple's personality and the nostalgic atmosphere of the old town, with the skillful application of limited low-cost materials to the small space.
Who are the clients and what's interesting about them?
The client was an experienced owner-chef who decided to close his previous restaurant in Yokohama, where he felt a sense of personal distance from his customers due to the restaurant's relatively large size and the separation between the cooking and serving areas. To reignite his passion for the business, he and his wife opted to relocate to downtown Tokyo and open a new, smaller, but more intimate restaurant that aligns with their vision.
